How to use a Survey Board?

IMPORTANT:  You MUST have WiFi at your location in order to use a Survey Board!

 

Thank you for ordering a Survey On The Spot Survey Board.  What do I do now?  

  • Save your PACKING LIST! This is very important as it includes the passcode necessary to unlock your iPod.
  • Please unpack your survey board
  • Startup your iPod
    • Press the power button on the upper top edge on the right.  
    • The display will show an Apple graphic
    • After 30 seconds, the display will show the time and at the bottom says "Slide to Unlock"
      • Note: If the display turns off simply press the square "menu button" at the bottom of the screen
    • Slide the "arrow" to the right to unlock your iPod
    • The display will show Survey On The Spot icon.
    • Slide your finger in the middle of the display from right to left to switch screens until you see a screen that displays the "Settings" application, which has a black graphic that shows several gears
  • In order to complete the setup of your iPod, you need to have an "active" survey and know the "survey code"
    • Log in to Survey On The Spot at www.surveyonthespot.com and click the "Surveys" tab
    • A list of surveys will be displayed.  Click the "Test" button to the right of the survey description
    • A window will appear with the survey code for each of your locations
      • <note: the list of codes will be displayed here shortly>
    • Write down the code as you will need it in the next step
  • Setup your iPod to automatically start your survey
    • Press MENU
    • Press SETTINGS (Gears)
    • Scroll to bottom by sliding your finger from bottom to the top
    • Select SURVEYS
    • Touch the Autostart URL window and enter the following - exactly!
      start?code=xxxxxx  (where xxxxxx is your actual survey code as described above)
    • Touch RETURN
    • Touch Settings (upper left)
    • Press the MENU button
  • Press the "menu button", swipe to go back to the page with the red "thumbs up" Surveys icon, and press "Surveys" to start your survey

 

What is a Survey Board?

Your "Survey Board" is an iPod touch securely attached to a "green" bamboo board that will automatically start your Survey On  The Spot® survey.  Please review the information below to learn best practices in restaurants and other settings to increase survey participation and at the same time rapidly build your email marketing list by using a Survey On The Spot survey board.

 

What are the best practices to use SURVEY ON THE SPOT to gather On-Site Insights (SM)?

It's easy to gather On-Site Insights and build your email marketing list during Available Guest Time at the end of a meal.  Using Available Guest Time while the server is processing payment, guests have time to complete a survey on an iPod touch or iPad provided by the restaurant.  This increases the number of responses dramatically!  Please contact us to learn more and discuss current implementations.

Restaurant Industry best practices include handing the survey to guests along with the guest check. During the "Available Guest Time" when your servers are processing the credit card your guests can complete the survey.   By building a question into your survey that asks if people want to join your email-marketing list may restaurants have received email addresses for between 20% and 60% of the surveys!  The email addresses can automatically be sent to Constant Contact and other email marketing list providers.  

The scenario is as follows:  The server hands the guest the bamboo board with the iPod touch and the guest check presenter.  While the server is processing the credit card the guest uses Available Guest Time (SM)to provide On-Site Insights (SM).  The response level has been 10-20X the level when consumers are asked to take surveys on their own phones!  In over 30% of the responses consumers "sign-up" for a mailing list.  The contact information can automatically be fed to mail list management services and is available in an Excel file.

Troubleshooting

Connectivity Issues:

iPod searching for surveys or other connectivity issues

First, check for WiFi connection

• Run the stock market or weather icon

If you cannot reach either of these, you have no WiFi connection

• Go to settings and make sure WiFi is turned on
• WiFi needs to be connected to the WiFi service in your location 

If this is the network connection and you don’t have WiFi

• Go to settings
• Go to general
• Scroll to the bottom and select reset
• Reset WiFi connections
• When the device resets go to WiFi
• Select your WiFi network

If still no connection, please check with the person responsible for your computers.

If you CAN reach the stock market and weather, you have a WiFi connection but there is a problem accessing your survey in the Survey On The Spot app

• Try restarting the app
• Click the home button to bring up the desk top
• Now double click the home button
• This brings the SURVEY ON THE SPOT icon to the bottom of the screen
• Hold the icon until it starts to wiggle
• Touch the minus sign to close the app
• Press the home button and then the Survey On The Spot icon to restart the app
• See if it brings up your survey

If this doesn’t work, delete the app and then reload the app. Follow the instructions below (you will need to have a WiFi connection e.g. Weather or Stocks need to be working)

A very kind guest has installed a passcode so I can’t start the survey!

A) If this happens will need to restore your iPod via iTunes and then reinstall below

• First you have to put your phone into the restore mode which is a slightly fiddly process.
• Plug your iPhone into your PC or Mac with the USB cable
• Press and hold the power button at the top and then slide to power off the iPhone
• Press the power button to power the iPhone on and keep it held while simultaneously pressing the home button
• After a few seconds a yellow alert triangle will appear and the iPhone will say it is iPhone Restore Mode.
• Open up iTunes and click on the Summary tab
• Click on Restore to restore your iPhone. This will reset all your iPhone's setting to the factory defaults, including the Passcode.


You should then activate the Passcode with the number used on your Survey Board packing list.
• Go to Settings
• Passcode lock
• Turn passcode on
• Enter #### (twice)  - the #### is the Passcode as shown on your Survey Board packing list
• Click require passcode – after 4 hours
• Press the home button

Reinstalling the Survey On The Spot iPhone/iPad/iPod touch App

If the app is still on the device, first you need to delete the existing Survey On The Spot app:

To delete it: Hold down the app icon until it starts to wiggle. Then touch the 'x'. It should go away. If you don't get the 'x', you need to go to settings, general, restrictions, and enter the "restriction code" as shown on your Survey Board packing list. Turn on "delete apps" (and while your there install apps). Then go back to the desktop and hold the SOTS icon until it wiggles and then touch the x to delete it.

Per above, make sure 'Install Apps is ON

Now press the App Store icon (Blue with a funky 'A' in a circle).

- press SEARCH
- enter SURVEY and Survey On The Spot will be displayed
- select Survey On The Spot
- press FREE
- press FREE a second time
- press INSTALL and the app will be installed

You will be prompted for the Apple iTunes user id and password.  Please use the iTunes user id and password from your Survey Board packing list.

That should take care of installing the app. Now you have to set it to automatically run the app for your location. We call this autostart.

To set Autostart on the iPod...
- Press MENU
- Press SETTINGS (Gears)
- Scroll to bottom by sliding your finger from bottom to the top
- Select SURVEYS
- Touch the Autostart URL window and enter the following - exactly!
start?code=xxxxxx
- Touch RETURN
- Touch Settings (upper left)
- Press the MENU button

Go back to setup, general, restrictions, enter your restriction code and turn off install and delete apps.

Now starting up SURVEYS should bring you to your survey every time, automatically.
